Named after the village it grows in, this cacao thrives in a coastal mountain valley area in North Central Venezuela. Other cacao types like Chuao, Ocumare and Choroní also grow along this coast.

The farms found in Cuyagua used to be part of a colonial hacienda owned by one individual by the name of Tovar Galindo. After the War of Independence, the hacienda was seized and parts of it were sold to former slaves. Nowadays, tourism represents the main source of income for locals. However, a small cooperative is still active in the region, carrying out fermentation and drying on their own facilities.

Post Harvesting Process

Fermentation takes place in wooden boxes during a period of 6 to 7 days. The beans are spread on patios to dry in the sun.
